When we first met Gibby, I did not make eye contact and waited for her to come to me to pet her for the first time. I am glad to learn I should touch their shoulder or neck first. My first response is to pat them on the head. Then, I sat on the couch to be closer to Gibby. She was very receptive. She let me give long strokes down her back, and soon she let me massage her hips.
